What I said about the Segway Muxi
A comfortable cruiser-style commuter with a strong throttle and a briefcase battery. No suspension, single speed, and the app is required to start.
I tested the Segway Muxi for several weeks. The 750W hub motor and throttle pulled hard every time, including up hills, the seat is very comfortable, and the battery lifts out like a briefcase so you can charge it at work. The rack is rated for 121 lbs. My biggest complaint by far was the app: I had to download it, make an account, agree to the terms and watch safety videos just to power the bike on. It has no suspension and is single speed, so it's best on smooth pavement.
My video review
Liked
- Strong throttle that works from zero and pulls hard on hills
- Briefcase-style removable battery you can charge at work
- Very comfortable, memory-foam-like seat
- Palm-rest grips
- 20 x 3 inch tires with a cruiser feel
- Rack with a 121 lb rating and an integrated tail light
- Hydraulic disc brakes front and rear
- Bright LED headlight and a battery skid protector
- AirLock auto unlock with the app
- Lightest bike in my comparison table at 72.75 lbs on Segway’s spec
Didn't
- The app, an account and terms were required just to power it on
- No suspension at all
- Single speed
- The speaker can’t play music
- Cheaper-feeling kickstand
- The horn sounds very electronic
What I said about the Segway Muxi Pro
A compact cargo e-bike with a front fork and auto shifting that carried me up a steep gravel hill. It costs $300 more than the Muxi.
I rode the Segway Muxi Pro for several weeks, including a steep gravel climb and a dirt trail, and its 750W hub motor pulled me up without trouble. It adds a front fork and an electronic auto-shifting 9-speed over the regular Muxi, plus fold-out pegs and a 121 lb rack for carrying a kid. The auto shifter mostly picked the right gear, but on a couple of hills it took about half a second to drop one, and there's no manual override. App setup is still required. If you only ride smooth paths, the regular Muxi does the same job for $300 less.
