Heybike Alpha review

$1,299 at Heybike (opens in a new tab)Updated Video published

Quick verdict

A mid-drive fat tire bike for $1,299 that handled gravel and wet asphalt really well in the pouring rain.

Pros

  • Mid-drive motor with a lot of responsive power, for $1,299 as of Nov 4, 2026
  • Handled gravel and wet asphalt really well in the pouring rain
  • Very bright LED headlight

Cons

  • The throttle doesn't work from a stop; you have to start pedaling first
  • No rear suspension
  • Heavy at 71.6 lb, per Heybike

Best for Riders who want a mid-drive on a budget. It's the main reason to pick the Alpha over a hub motor fat tire bike.

Heybike Alpha in a frame from Will's own test video

My verdict

I rode the Heybike Alpha on gravel and asphalt while it was pouring down rain, and it handled really well (0:08 to 0:15). The headlight was really bright in the rain and the fenders kept the water off me (0:15 to 0:23). The mid-drive gives you a lot of responsive power (0:27 to 0:31), and I called it a really good package from Heybike (0:47 to 0:49). Skip it if you want a throttle that works from a stop (Heybike says you pedal first), rear suspension, or a light bike: Heybike lists it at 71.6 lb. My video is under a minute, so I didn't test range, top speed or hills.

I tested the Heybike Alpha (affiliate link) while it was pouring down rain. I rode it on gravel and on asphalt, and it handled really well (0:08 to 0:15). You can watch the whole thing in my Heybike Alpha rain review. It’s a short video, under a minute, so this page sticks to what I saw and said in it, with time stamps. The specs I didn’t measure come from Heybike’s Alpha product page, checked Nov 4, 2026.

The headline is the motor. The Alpha is a fat tire bike with a mid-drive, not a hub motor, for $1,299 as of Nov 4, 2026. I called it a really good package from Heybike (0:47 to 0:49).

Should you buy one?

Buy the Alpha if you want a fat tire bike with a mid-drive motor without paying what the other mid-drive fat tire bike I’ve filmed costs. It was $1,299 on Heybike’s site as of Nov 4, 2026. In my video it handled gravel and wet asphalt really well, the headlight was bright in the rain, and the fenders kept the water off me (0:11 to 0:23).

Skip it if you want a throttle that pulls you away from a dead stop. Heybike says the half twist throttle only works after you start pedaling. Skip it too if you need a light bike, since Heybike lists it at 71.6 lb, or if you want rear suspension, because there isn’t any.

The deciding factor: how much you care about the mid-drive. If you mostly want throttle starts and a softer ride, the hub motor fat tire bikes I’ve filmed do more of that: the Aventure 3’s throttle worked from zero in my testing, and they add a suspension seatpost (Aventure 3) or a rear shock (Mokwheel Obsidian). If you’d rather pedal and have the motor respond through the gears, the Alpha does that for a lot less than the other mid-drive fat tire bike I’ve filmed.

Riding it in the pouring rain

I filmed the Alpha while it was pouring down rain, after riding it on some gravel and some asphalt, and the bike was handling really well (0:08 to 0:15).

Two things stood out in that weather. The first was the LED headlight. I was really impressed with how bright it was in the rain (0:15 to 0:18). Heybike says it has an auto-on feature, and there’s an integrated taillight with a brake light at the back. The second was the fenders, which did a great job keeping the water off me (0:18 to 0:23). Fenders and a rear rack both come on the bike.

One thing to know before you plan on a lot of wet rides: Heybike’s product page doesn’t publish a water resistance rating for the Alpha. Its warranty page also excludes damage from abnormal exposure to moisture and from exposure to weather conditions, along with corrosion. My video shows the bike in the rain, not how it holds up after months of it.

The mid-drive motor

On camera I pointed at the rear wheel to show there’s no hub motor there (0:23 to 0:27). The motor sits at the cranks and drives the chain, and I said you get a lot of responsive power through that powertrain (0:27 to 0:31). In my video description I summed it up as plenty of power.

Heybike lists a Mivice 500W mid-drive with 105 Nm of torque, paired with a torque and cadence sensor. Because the motor works through the gears, the Alpha has a Shimano Altus 8 speed drivetrain, and I pointed out the eight gears in the rear on the right side of the bars (0:41 to 0:45).

I didn’t measure top speed, hill climbing or range in this video. Heybike lists a 28 mph top speed and up to 60 miles from the 680 Wh battery, which is removable. Heybike’s page doesn’t print an e-bike class, so check how yours is set up when it arrives, and look at our e-bike laws by state for where a 28 mph bike can ride.

Controls and display

On the left side of the bars there’s the front brake and a horn (0:31 to 0:35). There are five levels of pedal assist, shown on a full color display (0:35 to 0:39). You can check today's price at Heybike.

On the right side are the shifter for the eight rear gears and a twist throttle (0:41 to 0:47). Heybike calls it a half twist throttle and says it’s activated in what it calls Natural Pedal Start Mode. Its FAQ explains that the throttle is designed not to work right from a stop. You start pedaling gently first, then use the throttle, and Heybike says to ease off the pedals or the throttle before you shift. I didn’t test that in my video, but it’s worth knowing if you’re used to throttle starts.

The brakes are hydraulic discs, per Heybike, and the fork is a hydraulic suspension fork. Heybike doesn’t list the brake model, rotor size or fork travel.

Sources: each maker’s product page, checked Nov 4, 2026. The Obsidian price is for the Yellow and Black color, the one listed in stock that day.

  • Aventon Aventure M. The other mid-drive fat tire bike I’ve filmed. In my review I found its mid-drive much more responsive than a hub motor, and its Auto assist and auto shifting worked really well on steep climbs. It has a suspension seatpost and 10 gears, but no throttle unless you buy one, and it costs $1,400 more than the Alpha as of Nov 4, 2026.
  • Aventon Aventure 3. A hub motor fat tire bike with a throttle that worked from zero in my testing, plus a suspension seatpost and an app. It’s $500 more than the Alpha on sale.
  • Mokwheel Obsidian. Full suspension and the biggest battery here. The dual suspension made it really comfortable in my review. It’s the heaviest of the four and costs about $500 more than the Alpha on sale.

If the mid-drive is the reason you’re looking, the Alpha and the Aventure M are the two to compare, and the price gap between them is big. If comfort and a throttle start matter more, the Obsidian and the Aventure 3 cover that better.

Who it’s for

  • Riders who want a mid-drive on a budget. It’s the main reason to pick the Alpha over a hub motor fat tire bike.
  • People who ride gravel and pavement, wet days included. It handled both in the pouring rain in my video, and the fenders and headlight did their jobs.
  • Riders who like to pedal and shift. The motor works with the eight gears, and the throttle is meant to be used once you’re already moving.
  • Anyone who wants fenders and a rack included. Both come on the bike.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Throttle-first riders. The throttle won’t start the bike from a stop.
  • Anyone who has to carry it. At 71.6 lb, stairs and car racks are a real job.
  • Riders who want a softer ride. There’s no rear suspension and no suspension seatpost listed.
  • Anyone who needs the step through right now. It wasn’t available to order on Nov 4, 2026.

Price, warranty and returns

The Alpha was $1,299 on Heybike’s site as of Nov 4, 2026, for both frames. The Galaxy Black step over was in stock, with Heybike quoting shipping in 1 to 2 days and delivery in 5 to 7 business days. The Pearl White step through was not available to order that day. Heybike also offered add-on accessory kits on the same page.

Heybike gives a 2 year warranty on bikes bought from heybike.com, starting the day you receive the bike, and it excludes wear items like tires, brake pads and chains. The page advertises a 14 day free trial, but the return policy has fees. If the bike is new and unused, a return within 14 days gets a full refund minus a $200 return shipping fee. From day 15 to day 30 there’s also a 20% restocking fee. If the bike has been ridden, a return within 30 days costs the $200 shipping plus a 50% restocking fee, and after 30 days you can’t return it. Quality issues within 14 days come back free. Those terms cover heybike.com orders only. Amazon and dealer purchases follow their own policies.

FAQ

Is the Heybike Alpha a mid-drive? Yes. In my video I showed there’s no hub motor in the rear wheel (0:23 to 0:27). Heybike lists a Mivice 500W mid-drive with 105 Nm.

Can you ride it in the rain? I filmed it in the pouring rain on gravel and asphalt, and it handled really well (0:08 to 0:15). Heybike doesn’t publish a water resistance rating, and its warranty excludes damage from weather and moisture exposure, so dry it off after wet rides and store it indoors.

Does the throttle work from a stop? No. Heybike says the half twist throttle is designed not to work from a standing start. Start pedaling gently, then use the throttle.

How fast does it go? Heybike lists 28 mph. It doesn’t print an e-bike class on the product page, and I didn’t measure top speed in my video.

How far does it go? Heybike claims up to 60 miles from the 680 Wh battery. I didn’t run a range test.

How much does it weigh? 71.6 lb, per Heybike, with a 400 lb limit for rider plus cargo.

Is there a step through version? Yes, in Pearl White, at the same $1,299. It wasn’t available to order on Heybike’s site on Nov 4, 2026. The bike in my video is the black step over.
